Finian Tan

Chairman, Vickers Capital Group

Dr. Finian Tan is the key Principal and Chairman of the General Partner. Dr. Tan is the Founder and Chairman of Vickers Capital Group, an international private equity and merchant banking house. Dr. Tan was Partner and Managing Director of the Silicon Valley Venture Capital firm, Draper Fisher Jurvetson Eplanet, in charge of their Asia Pacific Operations. As head of the Asia Pacific operations, Dr. Tan created and built the Asian operations of the Draper Fisher Jurvetson ePlanet Ventures Fund. In 2002, Dr. Tan reduced his role at DFJ ePlanet and concurrently assumed the position of Managing Director and head of the Credit Suisse First Boston group of banks (“CSFB”) in Singapore. During his tenure as head of the CSFB group of banks in Singapore, Dr. Tan remained as chairman of DFJ ePlanet’s Asian Investment Committee and to-date remains a member of the board of DFJ Eplanet (S) Ltd in Singapore. Prior to that, he served in the Singapore Government as Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Industry and later as Deputy Chairman of the National Science and Technology Board and Co-chairman of the US$1 billion TIF fund.He currently serves on numerous boards and committees including the boards of Cambridge Industrial Trust Management (Chairman, CIT listed on Singapore Exchange), ST Electronics Ltd (Parent ST Engineering listed on Singapore Exchange), Benchmark Pte Ltd (Chairman), California University of Technology (USA, Chairman), Asia Food Channel (Chairman), United Eagle Airlines (China), Mobinex Inc (USA and China), Sunfun Info Co Ltd (China), Real Time Gaming Asia Pte Ltd, the Wellness Group Pte Ltd, the Media Development Authority, the Singapore Polytechnic, the Singapore Venture Capital Association, Government Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Trade and Industry Resource Panel, Action Community for Entrepreneurs and several other government committees. He is also the chairman of the investment committee and audit committee of the Media Development Authority of Singapore. He has served as chairman or board member on numerous other boards and committees, including Baidu.com (NASDAQ), Defence Science and Technology Agency, the Life Sciences Investment Pte. Ltd., SMA (Singapore-MIT) Governing Board, Singapore National Computer Board, The National University of Singapore, the investment committee of the National University of Singapore, The National Cancer Centre, The Eastern Cluster of Hospitals in Singapore (Singhealth), Tuas Power Pte. Ltd., Sentosa Cove Pte. Ltd., Majulah Connection and the Singapore-Shandong Business Council.Dr. Tan was also a member of the Economic Review Committee of 1997 (Chaired by Minister Lee Yock Suan) and the working group of the Economic Review Committee of 2002 (Chaired by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong). Prior to his tenure in government, Dr. Tan had spent three years at Goldman Sachs, starting as Vice President at J.Aron and Co (Singapore) Pte, rising to Executive Director, and eventually to Regional Director and Head of J.Aron and Co (Singapore) Pte. in charge of Asia Pacific Region. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Dr. Tan was with Shell Eastern Petroleum Ltd, in Singapore and was later posted to Shell Japan Ltd, where he was promoted to Chief Trader.Dr. Tan is also involved in the non-profit scene in Singapore. He is the Founder and was the Founding Chairman of Bizworld Asia, a non-profit organisation where volunteers teach kids about business. He is also a Council Member of the National Arts Council and was previously on the board of Governors of the Gabrielite Foundation. Dr. Tan received his Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy in Engineering from Cambridge University on the Shell/Cambridge Scholarship. The Shell Scholarship is awarded competitively to the top 3 candidates from 11 commonwealth countries, and Dr. Tan was the first recipient of the award from Singapore. Dr. Tan was also concurrently on the Christ College Scholarship, an award given to the best college entrants of the year. Dr. Tan received his B.Sc. Degree in Engineering from the University of Glasgow, where he won all the academic prizes available for the examinations during his time there, including the top prize for his course, and the most distinguished graduate award. Dr. Tan, is an officer in the reserves, having graduated as the best officer cadet of his year. He was also President of the Cambridge University Malayan and Singapore Society at University, and represented his college in Squash. In the Polytechnic Dr. Tan was the Vice-captain of the Polytechnic Handball team, whilst in School, he was a school swimmer, and the 2nd in command of his School Military Band. Dr. Tan was also the choir master and conductor of the Voce Sanctae choir at St Ignatius Church and the Agape Choir at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
