Founder and CEO, Provender

Cai has been bringing the country to the city since his early days in Ontario, where he was a farm kid and equestrian athlete.  He was an apprentice in a 5 diamond Relais & Chateaux kitchen while in secondary school, and moved to Paris as a teenager for school and positions in Michelin-starred kitchens. He has been based in Montreal the last 6 years, where he manned the stoves of some of the best kitchens in the city while studying, including Au Pied De Cochon and Joe Beef.He was the co-director of the Marché Fermier, a community farmer’s market project started in collaboration with the Ville de Montréal.  Following the success of these markets, he was recruited to join Lufa Farms as a consultant, and rose to be the first Product Manager and ultimately managed the distribution of over 1000 weekly produce baskets to consumers in Montreal. After catching the startup bug at Lufa, Cai began consulting and speaking on the topic of urban agriculture & in Canada.  He led workshops and seminars in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver on the influence of Urban Agriculture on cities, and leveraged this expertise to win a global competition to design a system for Plantagon in Sweden involving waste-to-energy conversions from biogas facilities to greenhouse agriculture. He founded Provender in 2013 with Kyra and Jeff after two years of debate and discussion around the role of technology in food systems.
