Joseph Sherman

President/Co-Founder, The Reliant Group

Joseph L. Sherman is the President and co-founder of The Reliant Group, where he has served as President since 1993. Mr. Sherman is responsible for the day-to-day management of the company, employing a hands-on approach with each investment to ensure successful execution. The Reliant Group specializes in developing and acquiring multifamily housing on a national basis, with an emphasis on production and preservation of affordable housing. Since 1998, under Mr. Sherman’s direction, The Reliant Group has acquired or developed over 15,000 units of housing, at a cost in excess of $1 billion. In addition, Mr. Sherman is responsible for capital formation, acquisitions and management of the series of discretionary investment funds formed by The Reliant Group to invest in multifamily housing. Since 2001, The Reliant Group has formed eight discretionary investment funds, each with a successful track record. Prior to focusing on multifamily housing, Mr. Sherman, in partnership with The Resolution Trust Corporation, acquired over $750 MM of sub-performing and non-performing loans. An additional $550 MM of loan assets was acquired from private sellers.Mr. Sherman began his career as a real estate attorney in Washington DC with Lane & Edson, PC, representing affordable and market rate multifamily housing developers nationwide. The firm focused on HUD financing for affordable housing, particularly Section 8 housing development and syndication, where Mr. Sherman developed expertise in low income housing transactions. He later joined Oxford Development Inc., the country’s second largest developer of multifamily housing, and played a crucial role as the interface between Wall Street and Oxford in its public finance initiatives.During Mr. Sherman’s tenure, Oxford Development was the single largest developer user of tax-exempt financing for multifamily properties in the United States. While at Oxford, Mr. Sherman developed his skills in underwriting, finance and placement of tax-exempt bonds, backed by multifamily assets. He has served for over a decade as President of Rainbow Housing Assistance Corporation, a non-profit owner of low and moderate income housing. Rainbow meets the needs of low income populations with a service enriched housing model that provides a wide variety of programs, including: after school learning academies, computer literacy classes, health and wellness education, scholarship for disadvantaged youth and resume writing classes. In 2015, Rainbow served the needs of over 30,000 low and moderate income residents with its wide array of social services. Mr. Sherman is also Chairman of the Board of Texas Council Foundation for Social Resources, a Texas based owner of affordable housing. He a member of the board of SF Jazz, a San Francisco institution providing concerts, education and musical development. He heads the Real Estate Committee. Mr. Sherman has served as Chairman of the Real Estate Capital Recovery Association, Executive Director and President of Equality Community Housing, and as a Trustee for the Bay School of San Francisco, a science and technology high school – all of which he played a founding role.He has a BA from Bowdoin College magna cum laude and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center. He resides in San Francisco, CA.
