Founder, Burton Strategies

Mary Lindley Burton has devoted over twenty-five years to helping individuals in career transition. Founder of Burton Strategies in New York in 1978, she has worked with over 1600 clients one-on-one from a wide range of industries and fields. She has guided hundreds of professionals in the integration of their personal and professional goals, a core objective for many clients making career and job choices. In 1980, she co-founded the Harvard Business School Club of Greater New York’s Career Management Seminar. Attended by over 1100 Harvard Business School graduates, this popular seminar provided transition support to graduates of Harvard’s Master in Business Administration and Executive Education programs for eighteen years. In 1991, she co-authored In Transition: From the Harvard Business School Club of New York’s Career Management Seminar (HarperBusiness). Considered by many to be the most accessible and appropriate primer for professional mid-career job changers, In Transition has enabled a wide audience to avail itself of the process Ms. Burton has used with private clients. Burton Strategies offers a range of products to provide appropriate support as a dynamic economy and changing personal values prompt clients to re-examine career and life choices. A native of Minnesota, Ms. Burton received her Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Harvard Business School in 1976 and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion from Smith College in 1972. She worked for F.S. Moseley, Bankers Trust, and IBM before founding Burton Strategies. In her second year at Harvard Business School, she took a course that would prove to be the foundation for her future career: Self-Assessment and Career Development.
