The Rt Hon Dr the Lord Gilbert (81), UK Minister of State for Defense from 1997-99, is a member of the House of Lords and the Privy Council. He entered Parliament in 1970 and served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury (1974-75), Minister for Transport (1975-76), and Minister of State for Defense (1976-79). During the Conservative government, he was successively Senior Opposition member of the Select Committees, on Defense and Trade & Industry, and the Committee on Intelligence & Security. A Chartered Accountant, qualifying with Price Waterhouse in Toronto, Lord Gilbert was educated at St. John’s College, Oxford, and New York University, where he earned a PhD in International Economics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and a member of the Trilateral Commission, and he has served several companies on both sides of the Atlantic as an advisor and board member.
