Richard Howard

Portfolio Manager, Prospector Partners

Rich was born in 1946 in Philadelphia and describes his youth as “nomadic,” with stops in Pittsburgh; Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia; Beirut, Lebanon; and Detroit. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering from Millikin University and an MBA in finance from Harvard. He began his investment career at Connecticut General Investment Management Company. He then worked as senior industry analyst for Fidelity Management and Research. In 1982, Rich joined T. Rowe Price in Baltimore, and in 1989 became the portfolio manager of its Capital Appreciation Fund, which consistently was ranked four or five stars by Morningstar. That fund and related accounts grew from $120mm to $2.5 billion during his time as portfolio manager. From September of 2001 through August of 2005, he was a portfolio manager for White Mountains. In August of 2005 he joined Prospector Partners. Rich earned his CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation in 1976 and is a member (and former president) of the Baltimore Security Analysts Society. He is also a member of the National Association of Petroleum Investment Analysts. He enjoys coaching, playing and watching basketball, and reading about the Crusades, the Middle East and history. Rich also enjoys hiking, woodworking and serving on Millikin University’s Board of Trustees. He and his wife have two sons and four grandchildren. They live in Guilford, Connecticut.
