David Deitch

David A. Deitch, Ph.D., is National Chief Clinical Officer at Phoenix House. A clinical and social psychologist, Dr. Deitch is a Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, where he led the Center for Criminality & Addiction Research, Training & Application for the past 15 years. He has had faculty appointments at Temple University, the University of Chicago and the University of California at San Francisco, and was also Co-Founder of Daytop Village, Inc. A pioneer in addiction treatment with a large body of published works in the field, Dr. Deitch has more than 45 years experience in the development of drug abuse treatment systems for adolescents and adults. Dr. Deitch’s credentials make him a sought-after advisor, nationally and internationally. He has educated constituencies throughout Asia, Europe and the Americas regarding the delivery of drug abuse treatment services. He has served as Coordinator of Curriculum and Faculty for the United Nations East Central European Drug Abuse Treatment Training Project. He continues to consult to a variety of Departments of Corrections and Ministries of Justice and Health, in Latin America, South East and South Asia and Europe. Dr. Deitch’s expertise is also valued by key policy makers in the United States, and he has been the recipient of numerous state and national awards. He served during the Johnson Administration as consultant to the Presidential Commission for the Study of Crime and Juvenile Delinquency, and the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse. He chaired the White House Task Force on Prevention during the Carter Administration. In addition, Dr. Deitch has been a Principal Investigator on multiple state and federal grants.
