Thomas Smith has more than 24 years of experience in the private equity business spanning large leveraged buyout transactions to early and expansion stage venture investing. During his career, Smith has led venture capital investments in 21 companies that have generated cumulative realized investment returns exceeding 3x invested capital on a gross basis. He has been a key participant providing due diligence and governance support on many more venture capital transactions and at least six leveraged buyout transactions.
Smith started his career in 1986 as Vice President of Chase Manhattan Capital Corporation, the private equity affiliate of The Chase Manhattan Bank.
Smith joined Edison Ventures in 1990 and in 1994 opened and directed the firm¹s satellite office in Washington, DC. In 1998, Smith became a general partner of the Mid-Atlantic Venture Funds where he led several highly successful early stage technology and Internet startups.
For more than 10 years, Smith was an active Director of the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association, one of the premier venture capital trade associations in the country. Smith earned his MBA, Beta Gamma Sigma, from UNC-Chapel Hill and a BS, magna cum laude from Elizabethtown College.
