Willy Stern

Chair, The Legion Fund

For 35 years, Willy Stern roamed the world in search of news– from the boardrooms of Tokyo to the battlefields of Iraq, from the secret prisons of Afghanistan to the wilds of the Nicaraguan jungle, from the backwoods of Chile to the complex city of Jerusalem, from the wilds of northern Alaska to the volcanoes of Iceland, from the slums of Soweto in South Africa to the halls of power in Washington D.C., and many points in between. A former staff writer at Forbes and Business Week, Stern is the recipient of many national and international journalism awards and honors. His plainspoken style has engaged audiences around the world. He has taught at many schools around the country, including Williams College, Colorado College, Carleton College and Vanderbilt University’s Law School. Stern’s analytical, editorial and investigative writing has appeared in dozens of major publications around the globe, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The International Herald Tribune, The Chicago Tribune, The Weekly Standard and The New Republic. In the course of his reporting, Stern has been variously harassed, threatened, followed, arrested, and even been thrown out of one country. He has degrees from Williams College and Harvard University. Willy Stern is the founder and board chair of The Legion Fund, a rapidly-growing not-for-profit whose sole purpose is assisting U.S. Army 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). A veteran trail runner, Stern has completed marathons on five continents. In his spare time he guides wilderness-canoeing trips. Stern is the founder of the Lost Loon Triathlon. He is married to the former Ann Shapiro; they have two magical children, Zack (20) and Phoebe (14). He concurs wholeheartedly with the poet ee Cummings, who wrote that “nothing measurable matters.”
