Dr. Jack Shevel was born in a small town in South Africa . He qualified from the University of Witwatersrand medical school in 1979 at the tender age of 22. He is living proof that there are exceptions to the general rule that Doctors are mentally challenged when it comes to business. With no formal financial training and a mere R10 000 he coerced some Doctors to partner with him in a 1 operating room 7 bed day surgery center. With no capital Dr. Shevel was forced to take over financially compromised hospitals and in December of 1996 against all odds listed Network Healthcare Holdings Limited (www.netcare.co.za) on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange with 6 hospitals (4 of which had been in receivership) with a forecast maiden profit.
From a market capitalization of circa $40m, the Group grew under his stewardship to 120 hospitals, numerous other healthcare operations, and is today the largest integrated healthcare organization outside of the USA with a current market capitalization in excess of $3.5 billion. Dr. Shevel has a reputation of being consistent and outspoken in successfully bringing innovation to a sector which traditionally has been averse to change.
During his 9 year tenure at Netcare he delivered compound annual growth rates in excess of 30%. He describes himself as a simpleton who is not scared to touch the future. The family emigrated to the USA in 2006 after he and 3 of his children were victims of armed robbery. He is a self-confessed deal junkie and has invested in Centric Health (TSX:CHH) and is having fun growing this fledgling company into Canada's leading healthcare services company.(www.centrichealth.ca)
