Clay Dunnagan

Managing Partner, Anchor Capital Management Company, LLC

Clay founded Anchor Capital in 2008 and serves as the firm’s manager.Following graduation from business school in 1990, Clay began his professional career as a financial analyst for Ryder System (NYSE:R), where he participated in strategic planning projects and buy-side acquisitions. He then joined Trident Securities (Raleigh, N.C.) in 1993, where he managed over 40 mutual-to-stock conversions (initial public offerings) of thrift institutions and led the firm’s entrance into insurance company demutualizations. In 1999, he served briefly as the startup CEO of Saffron Technology, an early stage artificial intelligence software company (acquired by Intel Corporation in 2015). He then opened a Research Triangle Park (N.C.) office for Fletcher Spaght, Inc., a Boston-based strategy consultancy and venture capitalist, where he was a member of the general partner of the firm’s first VC fund and led numerous consulting engagements focused on high technology venture financing, corporate spin-offs and restructurings.In 2003, he joined VitalSource Technologies (Raleigh, NC), an early leader in digital content for the educational markets, to lead strategic and business development efforts with companies such as Apple, Amazon, and other market participants. Following the acquisition of Vital Source by Ingram Industries (Nashville, TN) in 2006, he was employed by Ingram through 2007, when he departed to form a real estate fund, Coastal Holdings, as the manager of the general partner with four other partners. Coastal Holdings secured over $40 million in commitments, but the general partner decided not to draw down capital given changes occurring in the real estate markets in late 2007. He then formed Anchor Capital in 2008.Clay holds undergraduate degrees from North Carolina State University and an MBA from Kenan- Flagler Business School. He is a past President of the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation Board, and currently serves on the Class of 2021 Parent Giving Committee for Woodberry Forest School as well as the Development Committee for the Walthour Moss Foundation in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
