FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN

Michael W. Sonnenfeldt

Founder & President

Michael W. Sonnenfeldt is the Founder of TIGER 21, the premier peer membership organization for high-net-worth wealth creators and preservers, and author of Think Bigger: And 39 Other Winning Strategies from Successful Entrepreneurs. TIGER 21’s 600+ Members collectively manage personal assets of $60 billion. 

 Mr. Sonnenfeldt is a serial entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political thought leader.  Through his private investment company, MUUS & Company, he has holdings in solar and other technologies related to alternative energy infrastructure applications.  Previously, he served as Chairman of Carmanah Technologies Corp., a public Canadian solar company.  Mr. Sonnenfeldt founded Emmes & Company, a boutique real estate investment firm that grew to over a billion dollars in assets. In 1980, he led the transformation of the Harborside Financial Center in Jersey City, NJ, the largest commercial renovation in the U.S. at the time.

 Mr. Sonnenfeldt is also a Board Member of Earthjustice and President of the Goldman-Sonnenfeldt Foundation.

 Mr. Sonnenfeldt earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the MIT Sloan School, where he was Phi Betta Kappa

EXECUTIVE TEAM

Jonathan L. Kempner

President Emeritus

Jonathan L. Kempner is President Emeritus of TIGER 21, having served as President from October 2009 through June 2016.  His present focus is on TIGER 21’s international expansion and planning its Annual Conference.  Prior to joining TIGER 21, Mr. Kempner was President and CEO of the Mortgage Bankers Association for seven years and President of the National Multi Housing Council for 14 years, with both national associations based in Washington, DC. 

Previously, Mr. Kempner was Vice President and General Counsel of Oxford Development Corporation; Assistant Director and General Counsel of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation; held positions at the Charles E. Smith Companies; the Law Firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Kampelman; the United States Department of the Treasury, Office of Capital Markets; and served as a Law Clerk to Federal Judge David W. Williams.

Mr. Kempner received his B.A. from the University of Michigan (with High Honors and High Distinction, Phi Beta Kappa), and his J.D. from Stanford Law School, where he served on the Stanford Law Review and as Chairman of the Law Forum.

Mr. Kempner serves on the Board of Directors of The Ciesla Foundation and on the Advisory Boards of TIGER 21, MAXX Properties and KiwiTech.  He served on the Board of Directors of Monogram Residential Trust, a REIT based in Dallas, TX listed on the New York Stock Exchange, before it was sold in 2017.

He is married to Dr. Lise Van Susteren and they have three daughters.

Greg Wells

Chief Operating Officer

Greg Wells joined TIGER 21 in early 2015. As Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Wells is responsible for the strategy, development and leadership of TIGER 21’s field-based personnel, which includes Group Chairs and Membership Executives throughout North America.

Having spent seven years at Vistage International as a member of the Executive Team and co-founding Sage Executive Group - a boutique high-end peer advisory organization in Southern California, Mr. Wells has extensive experience in leading and growing peer-to-peer advisory organizations. Mr. Wells also leads a group of M.B.A. students in a peer group program that connects them with CEOs as part of the Executive Leadership program at the UCLA Anderson School of Business.

Mr. Wells has extensive business and entrepreneurial experience from prior roles as CEO of a business finance company and as Senior Vice President and Division Manager of Southern California Business Banking for Wells Fargo. He is the founder of an event company that partners with a prominent Division 1 football program and is on the board of Big Fogg and Monrovia Growers.

A Southern California native, Mr. Wells is a graduate of the University of Oregon as well as the Pacific Coast School of Banking at the University of Washington, and the Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management program held at Dartmouth College.

Wendy Gartenberg

Chief Financial Officer

Wendy Gartenberg joined TIGER 21 in 2012 and currently serves as Chief Financial Officer. Ms. Gartenberg has over 25 years of extensive finance and accounting experience in various industry sectors and she has had much success in the design and implementation of strategies to strengthen financial controls and promote sound financial decision making. She is a Mathematician with a passion for financial analysis, budgeting and financial modeling. Over the past four years, Ms. Gartenberg has overseen the largest revenue growth in TIGER 21’s history.

Before joining TIGER 21, Ms. Gartenberg worked as Corporate Controller for seven years at Marie Chantal LLC, a United Kingdom-based wholesale, retail and e-commerce company. Ms. Gartenberg also served as Cooperative Auditor and then Food and Beverage Controller during her 10 year tenure at the Four Seasons Hotel chain in New York.

Ms. Gartenberg completed her studies at Emory University and George Washington University, earning a Bachelor of Science. 

 

Abby George Carey

Senior Vice President of Programs

Abby George Carey is Senior Vice President of TIGER 21 Programs, where she passionately spends her time developing innovative programs for our over 400 Members and their families.

Ms. Carey joined TIGER 21 in 2007 and has been involved with managing various aspects of the organization’s business. Currently, she leads the team responsible for speaker selection to the various TIGER 21 Groups in the United States, which collectively listen to content from over 600 thought-leaders yearly. Ms. Carey also is responsible for all aspects of the TIGER 21’s Annual Conference, where Members, spouses, and next generation families from across North America gather for pioneering content designed to support the unique needs of high-net-worth individuals. Prior to joining TIGER 21, Ms. Carey worked for The Estee Lauder Companies’ Prescriptives brand and earned her B.A., M.B.A, and J.D. from Georgetown University, where she was a multi-year captain of the women’s soccer team.

Erica H. Ross

Senior Vice President of Content

Erica H. Ross is Senior Vice President of TIGER 21 Content where she creates programming that enables TIGER 21 Members to engage with compelling speakers in ways that enhance Member experiences at TIGER 21 events.   

Ms. Ross has over 20 years of experience in event marketing and strategy for financial institutions.  After years of working with global organizations she is able to appreciate how each region and culture is unique and requires its own approach to programming. She joins TIGER 21 from J. P. Morgan where she was the Global Head of Events for the Private Bank. During her ten years with the firm she managed a team of approximately 40 planners across five countries who coordinated and executed over 1,000 events annually.  Ms. Ross’ main focus was strategic planning to ensure that each event was a unique and distinctive experience that reflected the Private Bank's business priorities and built an intellectual and emotional connection with clients, accelerated acquisition and deepened existing client relationships. 

Prior to J.P. Morgan, Ms. Ross was Vice President of events and conferences at Deutsche Bank where she managed equity conferences for the Investment Bank. Before that she was the Director of Business and Sponsorship Events for UBS's Wealth Management division. In addition, she launched the North American Events Team at The Royal Bank of Scotland. Ms. Ross began her career at a destination management company in Northern California. 

Ms. Ross is a graduate of Occidental College in Los Angeles where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. 

Kathy Gilmore

Vice President of New Group Development

Kathy Gilmore joined TIGER 21 in January 2017. As Vice President of New Group Development, Kathy is responsible for managing and guiding the new Chair (Group) launch process, which includes coaching Chairs and supporting the marketing events designed to assist the Chairs. She also leads the Chair Selection team in identifying, nominating, and recruiting New Chairs throughout North America.

Kathy has extensive experience in growing peer to peer organizations.  While at Vistage for five years, she and her team launched over 240 New Groups.

Kathy has a wide range of business and coaching experience from prior roles as Vice President of West Coast Operations and Human Resources of a Management Consulting Firm and Vice President of Operations for a California Based Disability Management Company.  She is also the co-founder of a Career Coaching firm which helps recent graduates transition from college to career.

Kathy holds a Master’s Degree in Education from The Catholic University of America, as well as a Bachelor of Science Degree from Saint Bonaventure University. She is a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach (Top Five Strengths: Positivity, Arranger, Woo, Individualization, Achiever) and recently completed a certification program in Emotional Intelligence. 

Kathy Nosek

Vice President of Membership Experience

Kathy Nosek is TIGER 21’s Vice President of Member Experiences.  Ms. Nosek has over 25 years’ experience in the luxury travel, event and wedding planning industry, including over 16 years in the Corporate Sports Marketing industry. She has assisted in organizing luxury events for Top Sponsorship Companies, including 6 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Athens, Torino, Beijing, Vancouver BC & London, 2 World Cup finals in Berlin and South Africa and 3 Super Bowls in Miami, Indianapolis and San Francisco.  Most recently, she was a Senior Account Manager with a Destination Meeting and Event planning company in the Bay Area planning, organizing and executing events for High Tech, Medical and Financial companies. 

As a former owner of three wedding and event companies, she possesses an understanding of the entrepreneurial platform for TIGER 21 and is a perfect match for creating memorable travel experiences for our members.

Ms. Nosek studied Psychology and Hotel Restaurant Management at Washington State University.

MEMBER DEVELOPMENT TEAM

Harley Frank

Vice President of Membership

Harley Frank is currently Vice President of Membership.

Mr. Frank has been involved with TIGER 21 since 2002 and has been involved in almost every phase of growth and operations during TIGER 21’s ascendancy – he takes pride in being able to connect Members with other Members throughout the organization. Prior to TIGER 21, he worked in a number of senior sales and marketing positions with leading businesses in advertising, marketing and real estate. Mr. Frank is active with the American Friends of Hebrew University.

Mr. Frank earned a B.A. from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an M.S.W. from Smith College.

Claire Lynch

Vice President of Membership

Claire Lynch recently joined TIGER 21 as the Vice President of Membership for Canada.

Ms. Lynch comes to TIGER 21 from the non-profit sector where she has worked in strategic development and fundraising for the past 16 years. Ms. Lynch has previously held senior and management positions with Mulgrave School, the Irish Hospice Foundation and GAP Activity Projects, working with these organizations to develop mission, vision and effective major gift fundraising strategies to support direction and development. Ms. Lynch was raised in Zimbabwe and earned a B.A. degree from the University of Cape Town.

Melissa Shilliday

Vice President of Membership

Melissa Shilliday is TIGER 21’s Vice President of Membership on the West Coast.

Ms. Shilliday has over 30 years of experience in sales and operational management. Most recently, she was Vice President at Alliance Bernstein where she advised high-net-worth individuals, families and foundations on their wealth strategy. Prior to Bernstein, Ms. Shilliday was CEO of several Bay Area start-ups, where she built executive teams and operational systems across a broad spectrum of industries including healthcare, luxury travel and apparel.

Ms. Shilliday earned a B.S. in Telecommunications from San Diego State University.
