Real Estate, Private Equity, and the Power of Peer Learning: TIGER 21 Founder on CNBC “Power Lunch”

TIGER 21 Founder and Chairman Michael Sonnenfeldt recently joined CNBC’s Power Lunch with its co-hosts Brian Sullivan and Kelly Evans to share timely insights from the organization’s latest asset allocation data. The conversation offered a rare window into the investment strategies of TIGER 21 Members, who collectively manage over $200 billion in personal assets.  

According to Michael, Members are doubling down on real estate and private equity, with each category representing 28% of their portfolios. In contrast, public equities account for 24%, with most of those holdings concentrated in passive vehicles such as index funds and ETFs. This allocation reflects a broader trend toward asset classes where Members can apply their domain expertise and maintain a greater level of control. 

“Members often invest in the sectors they know best,” Michael explained. “They gravitate toward opportunities where they have a strategic edge.”

He noted that TIGER 21 Members frequently reinvest in the industries where they built their wealth, favoring direct ownership in real estate or active involvement in private equity deals. Sectors such as multifamily housing and industrial properties remain consistent standouts. Members also collaborate on large-scale investment opportunities across the country, often leveraging their TIGER 21 network for strategic input. 

Michael emphasized the importance of experience in constructing what he referred to as “all-weather” portfolios, which are investment strategies designed to perform well across economic cycles. He also highlighted the value of peer learning and long-term thinking as essential tools for navigating market uncertainty. 

Throughout the discussion, Michael underscored the ongoing value of private deal flow and real asset ownership. From industrial developments to specialized private equity ventures, TIGER 21 Members continue to shape markets by leaning into collaboration, experience, and a global perspective.
