Robert Albertson

Principal / Chief Strategist, Sandler O'Neill & Partners, LP

Mr Albertson is a Principal and Chief Strategist for Sandler O’Neill & Partners, LP, an investment banking firm dedicated to financial services companies and specializing in strategic business planning, mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, mutual-to-stock conversions, investment portfolio and interest rate risk management, fixed income securities transactions, loan portfolio restructurings, and equity research sales and trading. Mr. Albertson heads the Investment Strategy Group and chairs the Investment Policy Committee, which guides the firm’s outlook for the financial services sectors. He provides investment strategy for institutional investors, consults with Sandler O’Neill clients, and works closely with the firm’s Executive Committee. He reports directly to the Senior Managing Partner, one of only two direct reports. Previously, he was founder and President of Pilot Financial, a global financial sector performance fund spanning European, Latin and US banks, brokers and specialty finance companies. Pilot invested in over 25 companies in a dozen countries, and outperformed the S&P 500 index by over 2000 basis points and the Morgan Stanley All-Financials global index by over 500 basis points. He is also on the advisory board of Affinity Financial, a premier U.S. provider of private-label on-line banking, supplying its partners with web content enabling a full-range of co-branded financial services directly to their users, while simultaneously enhancing customer loyalty and time spent on the partner site Mr Albertson was Director US Bank Research (1987-99) and Global Coordinator for financials research (1997-99) for Goldman Sachs & Co, where he led a team of analysts covering the US banking industry and established initial research coverage of banks in Europe in the 1980s and several Latin American banks in the 1990s. He also spearheaded research efforts on internet banking and the impact of technology. He consistently maintained a 15-year, top-ranking in independent surveys as a securities research analyst specializing in the financial sector, including the Institutional Investor poll where he finished as #2 in the U.S. and as #1 in global coordination for bank research. While at Goldman, he also worked closely with investment banking, supporting new business development, designing and marketing equity offerings, and consulting on acquisitions. During his tenure at GS&Co he was involved in over twenty, major bank stock underwritings and IPOs. He has also been a regular consultant on bank mergers, counseling investment bankers, bank managements and bank boards. Prior to Goldman, he was Managing Director, US Bank Equities Research at Smith Barney Mr Albertson is a graduate of both the Harvard Business School and Carnegie-Mellon University as a Tau Beta Pi scholar. He has been a frequent commentator for CNN, CNBC, and Nightly Business television as well as other business news media, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Economist and The American Banker. He has also been a regular speaker before banking industry and supervisory organizations, including many of the top 25 US banks, the New York Federal Reserve Bank and the Bank for International Settlements. Mr Albertson is a member of the Bretton Woods Committee, a Director of Affinity Financial Corporation and Sunova Capital, and a member and former President of the Bank & Financial Analysts Association.
