Jim MacGowan is the Managing Partner of the Calgary Private Company practice of Deloitte. In this capacity, he manages the audit, tax, consulting and mergers and acquisitions practice serving private companies and their shareholders.
Jim recently relocated from Halifax, Nova Scotia where he was the Senior Tax Partner and the Director of Operations for the Atlantic Tax Practice of Deloitte. Jim graduated from Dalhousie University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and obtained his Chartered Accountancy designation in 1987. He has practiced tax for the past 23 years with a particular emphasis on providing income tax advice for private companies and their shareholders. He specializes in dealing with high net-worth clients and has implemented succession plans for many of the largest companies on the east coast.
In addition to his management role in Calgary, Jim is also the national leader of the Private Company Tax practice for Deloitte which is the largest of its kind in the country. In this capacity, he oversees provision of domestic tax services by 64 partners and 280 staff across all geographies in Canada. The major areas of focus of the practice, which vary by region, include:
• Tax planning and consulting to private corporations
• Domestic tax and estate planning to business owners, executives, professionals and high net worth families
• Personal tax compliance for a wide range of clients
• Corporate tax compliance to primarily private corporations
