Keith Shapiro is a professional passive investor who has supported entrepreneurs with capital, strategic advice and relationships for 30 years.
Keith has also practiced law for 36 years, specializing in corporate restructuring. A global leader in the field, Keith founded the Chicago office of Greenberg Traurig and built the team into one of the most prominent practices in Chicago. He served as Co-Managing Shareholder for 16 years and as Chairman since then. Nationally, Keith served as Global Vice President and on the Executive Committee for many years as the firm grew into the largest law firm in the US, with nearly 2100 lawyers in 39 cities and over $1.5bn in annual revenue.
Keith’s experience in the board room of small and large companies provides him with a unique perspective on the things that can go wrong when building a company, including corporate formation and governance errors, strategic balance sheet errors, operating and execution failures as well as other pitfalls experienced during a rapid growth phase. This experience, combined with decades of high pressure, high stakes, deal making, gives Keith a unique perspective on how to carefully manage risk while picking high integrity, talented and driven entrepreneurs to support.
In 2014, Keith shifted his focus to establishing and managing his family office. In 2015 Keith created Karlov Street Capital, LLC, which invests in sponsors in the real estate, finance and venture capital sectors, deploying capital from the Shapiro Family Office and over 125 high net worth investors.
Keith is frequently sought after for strategic advice and board service and currently sits on the Board of Tock, Inc., which recently raised a successful new round of capital led by Origin Ventures and Valor Equity. Tock has created a unique restaurant reservation system which is taking on Open Table in the multi-billion dollar restaurant reservation marketplace.
He also sits on the Advisory Board of Novel Coworking, which acquires historic city-center buildings across America and redevelops them into co-working communities. Novel Coworking currently owns and operates 28 properties valued in excess of $500m. Karlov Street recently co-led Novel Coworking’s latest capital raise of over $100M+. Karlov Street Capital is also a lead investor in a series of funds led by MB Health Care Real Estate, the largest privately held owner of medical office properties in the US.
Keith also sits on the Board of Traverse Pointe Partners, a private equity fund focused on lower middle market operating businesses. He recently became the Board Observer for Zoomcar, a Bangalore, India based short term automobile leasing business backed by Sequoia India and Ford Motor Company.
Keith also cherishes his role in the philanthropic community and has served in leadership roles with many philanthropies. He is the recipient of the Judge Simon Rifkind Award from the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Judge Learned Hand Award from the American Jewish Committee, and the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award from the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) organization.
For fun, Keith enjoys dining in the more than 20 restaurants in which he has invested, including several of the world’s finest. He has three grown sons and has been married to Marci for 37 years.
