Alan Zafran

Senior Managing Director and Portfolio Manager, First Republic Bank

Alan Zafran is a Senior Managing Director and Portfolio Manager at First Republic Investment Management. Mr. Zafran has served as a financial adviser to wealthy families and institutional investors for the past 23 years. He began his career at Goldman Sachs in 1990 in the Private Client Group. After seven years at Goldman Sachs, Mr. Zafran and his entire team joined Merrill Lynch in 1997, where he helped to build the Private Banking and Investment Group. In May 2008, Mr. Zafran co-founded Luminous Capital, an independent Registered Investment Advisory firm. Luminous Capital had $5.9 billion of assets under management when it was acquired by First Republic Bank in December 2012. Active in the community, Mr. Zafran serves on the Board of Directors of Venture Lending & Leasing VI, a public-filing Business Development Corporation. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Castilleja School and the Portola Valley School Foundation Endowment, and he formerly served on the Board of Trustees for the International School of the Peninsula. Mr. Zafran actively supports the Canary Foundation (for early cancer detection), the South Central Scholars Fund (a foundation providing funding and support for inner city college-bound youth), Mercado Global (a fair trade organization to fight poverty), and Harvard Business School. Mr. Zafran is a CNBC-YPO Chief Executive Network Member, a Contributor to Bloomberg’s “Taking Stock,” a Contributor to Wall Street Week, and has written articles for various financial publications including Forbes and The Street. Mr. Zafran holds a B.A.S., Political Science and Economics, from Stanford University, Phi Beta Kappa, and an MBA from Harvard Business School, 1990.
