Senior Vice President, Wentworth, Hauser and Violich Investment Counsel

J. Michael Gallagher entered the investment management profession in 1960 when he first became a Security Analyst and then an Account Executive for Sutro & Co. He spent year and a half training in the research department before registering with the SEC to sell securities. In 1963, he joined the Trust Department of the Bank of America as a Security Analyst, becoming Vice President responsible for the Northern California Trust Portfolio Management Group, which had more than $1 billion under management. He was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1968. As a security analyst at the Bank of America, Mr. Gallagher was responsible for covering first utility stocks, and later the oil industry. After five years in research he transferred to portfolio management to handle high net worth clients. He rose in portfolio management to become responsible for half of the Trust Department’s investment management group, overseeing a staff of twenty-five. Mr. Gallagher joined Wentworth, Hauser and Violich in 1976, and was awarded Chartered Investment Counsel in 1981. At Wentworth, Hauser and Violich, he has worked as an analyst and portfolio manager. During his tenure, company assets have risen from $250 million to $6.5 billion. Prior to the sale of Wentworth, Hauser and Violich to Laird Norton Trust Company in 1994, he was the firm’s fourth largest shareholder. Mr. Gallagher received a B.S. from the University of Notre Dame and an M.S. from Columbia University.
