Mary Pearl

President, Wildlife Trust

Mary C. Pearl is the President of Wildlife Trust, a solutions-oriented global organization dedicated to innovative conservation science, linking ecology and health, and building careers of local scientists and educators in high-biodiversity countries in North America, Asia, Africa and Latin America. She previously also served as Associate Director of the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation, a consortium at Columbia University that includes the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Botanical Garden and the Wildlife Conservation Society/Bronx Zoo. She writes a monthly column on science for Discover Magazine, and is editor of the series, “Methods and Cases in Conservation Science” at Columbia University Press and co-editor of the recent (2002) book from Oxford Press, “Conservation Medicine.” She is co-founder of the Center for Conservation Medicine, a consortium of Wildlife Trust with the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, the USGS National Center for Wildlife Health and the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University She is an Adjunct Research Scientist at Columbia. Prior to joining Wildlife Trust, Dr. Pearl created and directed the Asia/Pacific program at the Wildlife Conservation Society, and also ran their international research fellowship program. Her own research background concerns the behavioral ecology and conservation of Asian primates, and she has authored a large number of publications in the field of conservation science and environmental education. She has lived and worked in Pakistan, Indonesia and Argentina, and has worked extensively Asia and Latin America. Dr. Pearl lectures widely, and has been featured on CNN, National Public Radio, CBS and NBC, and has been quoted in Newsweek, Smithsonian, and other popular publications. She serves on the boards of the Institute for Ecological Research in Brazil, the Belize Audubon Society, the Asian Nature Conservation Foundation, and the American Society for the Conservation of Nature in Israel. Dr. Pearl received her undergraduate and doctoral degrees from Yale University, and received an honorary degree from Marist College.
