Stewardship of Your Whole Life: The TIGER 21 Defense Library

Is my estate plan still doing what I intended? Am I taking care of my health as well as I take care of my business? What story is my life telling—and is it the one I want told? How can I make a lasting impact in a cause my family and I truly care about?
TIGER 21 Members regularly bring their most challenging questions to one another during the Portfolio Defense, the cornerstone of each Group Meeting.
Every Member completes a Portfolio Defense in their first year. In subsequent years, the TIGER 21 Defense Library provides Members a deeper set of frameworks for examining the full scope of their lives, including their wealth, their well-being, and their legacy.
“TIGER 21 is about stewardship of your whole life.”
– Nashville Chair Elise Mitchell
The Portfolio Defense: A First-Year Foundation
The Portfolio Defense remains a signature TIGER 21 experience, one that Members often credit with helping them make their most consequential decisions.
“It’s easier to be smart about other people’s problems than your own.”
– London & Global Chair Brian Pohl
In their first year, Members present a Portfolio Defense to confidentially explore their entire investment portfolio and gather candid feedback from their Group. In addition to discussing their assets, liabilities, income, and expenses, Members also explore the personal aspects of their lives with the trusted peers in their Group—family dynamics, legacy, purpose, philanthropy, and more.
A Library That Evolves with the Journey
After their first-year Portfolio Defense, Members return to the TIGER 21 Defense Library year after year to gain new insights.
In collaboration with their TIGER 21 Chair, Members can select from the following Defenses:
Advanced Portfolio Defense
Some Members choose to repeat their Portfolio Defense, revisiting the exercise with the benefit of time and experience. If they want to explore their Portfolio Defense through a new lens, Members can select one of the Advanced Portfolio Frameworks, including:
- The Future Self: The traditional Portfolio Defense focuses on understanding where you are today. The Future Self Framework invites you to take a step forward in time to consider the longer arc of your decisions.
- 7 Questions: Contemplating these seven fundamental questions can help clarify what matters most to you, the principles you stand for, and the relationships and institutions that shape your life.
- Kanter-Informed Family Wealth Reflection: This Advanced Portfolio Defense framework explores new perspectives on values, purpose, responsibility, and the role wealth plays within your family system, drawing from the work of Joshua Kanter.
- Navigating Change: Whether personal or professional, transitions often signal change, growth, or realignment. This framework creates the space to process any transitions you may be navigating—or anticipating.
Estate Planning Defense
Estate planning is ultimately about people, not paperwork. The Estate Planning Defense can illuminate blind spots in plans that were drafted years ago and largely put aside. It also offers Members the opportunity to draw on peer wisdom around complex successions, including ones that might not have gone as intended.
Members choose from two different versions of the Estate Planning Defense:
- The first version is designed for Members creating an estate plan for the first time.
- The second encourages Members to analyze their current estate plan, which can be especially useful for Members who haven’t reviewed their plans recently.
Health and Wellness Defense
Vitality and longevity have become frequent topics of discussion within the TIGER 21 community. Some Members present their Health and Wellness Defense along with extensive data and a medical team in place. Others arrive with questions they have been putting off. Either is welcome.
The Defense creates space for Members to think honestly about prevention, longevity, sleep, stress, and what stewardship of one’s own health looks like at this stage of life.
“The Health and Wellness Defense gives people a chance to do a much deeper dive about their health.
What are the different metrics I would use to assess my current state of health? Do I have, you know, goals and ambitions for my health? If I want to do something ambitious, like hike the Alps, what’s going to help me get to that point?
It also allows you to really think about your whole health story.
What’s been my past? Are there some genetic issues I should be aware of? What’s my social environment? Am I creating an environment that allows me to live the type of healthy life that I want to live?”
– Nashville Chair Elise Mitchell
Legacy Defense
Legacy is bigger than transfer documents. Legacy is about values, relationships, wisdom, and the causes you choose to strengthen. The Legacy Defense offers Members the opportunity to step back and consider the story their life is telling now, and the one they want remembered later.
Questions Members contemplate in the Legacy Defense include:
- What relationships have I cultivated that will continue to flourish after I’m gone?
- What lessons or stories am I actively sharing with younger generations?
- What intellectual property have I developed that should be preserved?
Philanthropy Exploration Defense
The Philanthropy Exploration Defense offers an opportunity to reflect on a personal or family philanthropy philosophy. Presenting Members leave their Exploration Defense with concrete ideas for enhancing their contribution of time, talent, treasure and/or ties to further philanthropic objectives.
With the knowledge that Members come to this Exploration Defense at different stages in their journey, this exercise is designed to help Members take the pulse of where they are—and where they’d like to be.
Powered by Collective Intelligence
The true value of any TIGER 21 Defense lies in the experience and insights of the peers gathered—the collective intelligence in the room. It also rests on the promise of confidentiality. TIGER 21 Members know that anything shared in the Meeting room will be held in the strictest confidence, creating an environment of both trust and candor.
To protect the integrity of the TIGER 21 global network—and ensure the quality of the conversations in the monthly Meeting—all TIGER 21 Members are vetted through the lens of the 5Cs of Membership. Additionally, each TIGER 21 Group is personally curated by the Chair who leads it to provide each Member with a board of advisors ready to offer fresh perspectives through learned experience.
